AI News Week 20 — Apple opens up to Claude, Google rebuilds Android around Gemini, 82% of SMEs are in

Something big shifted this week: your operating system is going to stop choosing your AI for you — and start asking. Apple is opening up to Claude and Gemini, Google is turning Android into an "intelligence system", and a new SBE Council survey shows 82% of small businesses are already using AI tools. Three stories, one clear Monday plan.

1. iOS 27 — you finally get to pick which AI Apple uses

Apple confirmed ahead of WWDC: iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 will let you set Claude or Gemini as the default assistant for Apple Intelligence features — Writing Tools, Image Playground, Siri queries. ChatGPT isn't dropped, just no longer the default.

Why it matters for you: if you work on an iPhone, you've been involuntarily locked into ChatGPT whenever you used Apple Intelligence. From autumn 2026 you actively choose — and that matters enormously for sensitive business data. Claude is meaningfully more privacy-oriented (does not train on API data).

Monday plan: decide now which AI you want for which context. Write yourself a mini-list: drafting emails → ChatGPT, analysing contracts → Claude, Google Workspace stuff → Gemini. When iOS 27 ships, you know exactly what to tap.

2. Android becomes an "intelligence system" — Gemini in every app slot

Sameer Samat, Google's Android chief, told CNBC this week: "We're transitioning from an operating system to an intelligence system." Translation: Gemini won't be an app any more, it'll be the layer between you and your phone. Search, calendar, mail, notes — everything with a Gemini layer.

Why it matters for you: if your team uses Google Workspace, Gemini is going to become massively more present in Mail, Docs, Sheets, Drive over the coming months. That's enormous productivity — and a compliance topic, because data flows to Google's AI by default.

Monday plan: go into Google Workspace Admin → Apps → Google Workspace → Gemini and check the data-usage settings. Make sure "Use my workspace data to train Gemini" is off. A two-click job with high protection upside.

3. 82% of SMEs are already in — are you?

The SBE Council 2026 Small Business Tech Use Survey delivered a hard number: 82% of small businesses have invested in AI tools. The investment rate jumped from 36% (2023) to 57% (2025) — nearly doubled in two years. Top use cases: content creation, marketing/sales support, workflow automation.

Why it matters for you: if you haven't started yet — you're no longer "early", you're slow. If you already use AI but only ChatGPT Plus for personal writing: your competitor is probably automating their proposals, their CRM, their newsletter right now.

Monday plan: answer honestly: which 3 recurring tasks cost you more than 30 minutes this week? Those are your first AI project.

Tool of the week: ChatGPT Pulse / Claude Orbit / Gemini Proactive

All three major AI models have launched (or are launching) "proactive" modes:

  • ChatGPT Pulse: delivers a personalised morning briefing based on your topics + Gmail + Calendar
  • Claude Orbit (beta, spotted in desktop/mobile app code): proactive assistant connecting Gmail, Slack, Calendar, Drive
  • Gemini Proactive: personal suggestions + a 24/7 "Remy" agent

Who benefits most? Solopreneurs + executives with full inboxes. Anyone processing 40+ emails/day saves 30-60 min daily.

Privacy note: all three need access to mail and calendar. For sensitive B2B data, use a test account first, not your main account.

Karim's take

This week shows: AI is no longer a choice — your OS is making it for you. The real question is whether you make the call, or whether Apple, Google and Microsoft make it for you. Swiss SMEs who don't actively decide which AI tool is allowed to do what are handing data sovereignty to the defaults of the tech giants.

That's exactly what we sort out in the Executive AI Sparring in one session: you walk out with a clear matrix — which account, which AI, which data, which boundaries. No theory, just a printed page you hand your team.
